28/32 ADHA to manifold gasket?

Post by wetminkey »

I still have no info to adjust my choke adjustments on this ADHA, and I've kept the old adjustments as close as possible, so back in the car it goes. The Fiat Shop Manual describes a choke requiring slightly different adjustments than this one,...
I'm not convinced that my carb to manifold gasket is proper,...looks like a 're-purposed' phenolic spacer to me.
I tried search, but my choice of search words will NEVER get me anywhere with this subject!
Can anyone describe what gasket I should have for my stock '79 Spider 2000?
Thank you very much! Todd.

That 're-purposed' phenolic spacer is probably a try at keeping the carb isolated from any/some of the heat coming from the manifold. The "gaskets" are just very thin gasket material you can buy from any auto parts supply house by the sheet. (you can make them yourself using an exacto knife) You need two, one below the spacer and one above. Hint: No Glue. If you really want to be anal about it like someone I know, you take a piece of glass, tape some 2000 grit sand paper to it and "true up" the matting surfaces of the carb and the spacer. Then put something (a rag) in the intake manifold to keep all the shavings out and true up the mounting surface of the manifold (yes you have to remove the mounting studs) by wrapping the 2000 paper around something flat. After cleaning, reassemble in the true tradition of the old "shade tree mechanic". Yes, he always left the rag in the intake too. But that's OK. That's why it's always good to use a red rag.

NB: If you coat the matting surfaces with a "magic Marker" you can see all the high spots and low spots as you "true up".

Cool, thanks! I found some examples online, and I see that they're thin, long-oval, one-holers. I found a spacer between my carb and my manifold, but no paper gaskets,...I'll fix that.
I didn't think what I was looking at was proper,...
Thanks, again.

All I had was a single phenolic spacer between my carb and manifold. It's a two-holer (28 and 32mm),...
It was probably providing me with innumerable vacuum leaks, since there were no other gaskets,...
I'll add paper gaskets to either side of it, rather than replace it with a one-holer. The car will have a tiny extra umph of torque, via the longer venturis.
I hope to be able to afford to replace this stock setup with a single plane manifold (I believe from an 1800 cc) and a better carb someday,...

Todd,
I was lucky enough that when I bought mine, the PO had a ton of extras. Including the flat plane manifold and the Weber 32/36. Good thing I also had a "spare" head since the one on the car had a hole in the top that the PO had used JB weld to "repair".
Yes, save you $$ and find the upgrade: well worth it. Of course I get to contend with CA smog every 2 years.

Thanks for you previous help and discussion regarding our ignition systems.

You are welcome geo! Let me know if you hear of another 1800 cc, single plane intake manifold that's available,...I think I'd like to begin the change-over for my Spider. I can shop for a proper carb later on.
I made the trip to NAPA for 1/64" paper gasket material and razor-bladed out two gaskets for my two-hole carb to manifold spacer (previously re-purposed phenolic spacer from the Weber). All fits nicely.
Didn't have time to bolt the carb in place tonight. Manyana,...

Thanks, PaulC!
But I'll struggle enough with this ADHA/dual plane to get everything going nicely for this spring/summer/fall, and perhaps tackle that project this next winter. Looks like single-plane, Fiat manifolds are available from time, to time,...

I SEE,........said the blind man, as he picked up his hammer and saw! Bamm Bamm.
OMG! Everyone keeps pushing me to buy a carb and manifold! I don't know if I can withstand the PRESSURE!
32/36 + single plane is probably the perfect replacement for my 28/32 + dual plane on my 2000cc straight four! This could SERIOUSLY push back upholstery,...
